The five monumental churches of Antwerp - the Cathedral of Our Lady, St. Andrew's church, St. Charles Borromeo's church, St. James's church and St. Paul's church - form a unique ensemble of five historical churches within walking distance. Many see them as a unique reference to 17th century Northern Baroque. As no other church St. Charles Borromeo is the example of religious Baroque architecture in the Southern Netherlands, and the other four churches are all Gothic buildings with exceptional Baroque works of art and interior elements.
All five churches house works of art from world class, whereof as many as 22 have been registered on the list (from the 17th century) of the Principal Items Decree.
Each church is undoubtedly worth visiting separately, not only for their rich patrimony but also for their architecture and history. Together they form an exceptional synopsis of the culture of the Southern Netherlands, from which the constant evolution of the architectural history, the organizational structures and religious thought can be followed. Through centuries of construction, change and adjustments the evolution of these monumental churches has continued until today and has a lasting impact on the city of Antwerp and city life.
